New Volunteer Requirements

Attention Current and New Volunteers

Recently the Ministry of Justice – the provincial regulatory division for Criminal Record Checks (CRC), introduced new regulations requiring any volunteer or contractor who comes near or works around children and/or vulnerable adults to complete a criminal record check through the Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP), regardless of the time spent working near or around students, i.e., 1 hour or 1 month.

To date, volunteers and Noon-Hour Supervisors have only been required to provide a police record check through a local detachment, which is valid for 3 years and does not include a vulnerable sector search. The new requirement is a Criminal Record Search through the Ministry of Justice, which is valid for 5 years and includes a vulnerable sector search.

The reason for the change is to ensure the safety of our students at all times regardless of position (staff, contractor, or volunteer) or purpose (e.g. assisting students directly, repairing a roof on a school, presenting at a student forum, or supervising students during their lunch hour).

This means that all volunteers, Noon-Hour Supervisors, and contractors must obtain the same CRC clearance as employees. This change is effective immediately. The new volunteer requirements will have to be met by all volunteers at our school.  Please visit the School Board Office before January 31, 2020 to fill out the CRC consent form and present two pieces of approved ID (one primary and one secondary).  A list of approved ID is attached below.
