Board seeks public feedback on Boundary Review Proposals

The Abbotsford Board of Education is currently seeking public feedback on proposed neighbourhood catchment changes for some east side schools and the future development of an Eagle Mountain Elementary school.

“The Board of Education is responsible for making the final decision on what the proposed neighbourhood catchments for submission to the Ministry of Education will look like,” said Shirley Wilson, Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education. “But before any decisions can be made, we have not only a duty, but a desire, to offer a public consultation process to ensure the voices of our school families and community are heard and collected.”

The neighbourhood catchment boundary changes being presented include:

  • 2 Options for the proposed Eagle Mountain Elementary
  • Auguston Elementary / Prince Charles Elementary
  • Terry Fox Elementary / Dr. Roberta Bondar Elementary
  • Margaret Stenersen Elementary / Sandy Hill Elementary – French Immersion Program

The proposed boundary review changes were developed after a thorough review of the district’s Long Term Facilities Plan and in consideration of information from the City of Abbotsford. The City of Abbotsford has a robust growth plan that includes significant housing development in the Eagle Mountain, Vicarro Ranch and McKee Peak areas. The expected range of growth will affect the district’s student enrolment and school capacities.

“The boundary review process is the first step in preparing for the new Eagle Mountain elementary school and for addressing school capacity issues on the east side of Abbotsford,” said Ray Velestuk, Secretary-Treasurer for the Abbotsford School District. “We are anxiously waiting for Ministry of Education approval so we can begin construction of this new school.”

The Boundary Review public consultation process will run until Friday, March 30th, with comments closing at 4pm. Members of the public can review the proposed neighbourhood catchment maps and provide their comments online at Following the deadline, comments will be collected and presented to the Board of Education for consideration at a May 2018 public Board meeting.
