Bondar Special Guest Readers

March 15, 2024

Literacy is the focus of our School Plan at Bondar for the 2023-2024 school year, and in support of this plan, we have been inviting Bondar Special Guest Readers into the school. These adults in our community have been selected to read a story of their choosing to show and to share their love of reading with our students. In January, Constable Neil Cole, our school Liaison Officer, shared a story about dealing with feelings of frustration and anger as well as a story about Terry Fox. He told us about a personal connection that he has with the Fox family and spoke with the kids about his role as a Police Officer. In the Month of February, Mr. Eddie Plenert, a Port Coquitlam Fire Fighter (and Mrs. Gagne’s brother), read us one of his favourite storybooks that he reads to his own children. He told us about his passion for reading, both for pleasure and for learning, he answered many questions about his job as a Fire Fighter, and he even showed us how quickly he could get dressed up into his fire gear (something he practices regularly to be ready in an emergency). In March, Superintendent Sean Nosek spoke to us about what he does as the leader of the school district and got students’ imaginations going with a story about what students might create if THEY could build schools. The spaces in which we grow and learn were shared and appreciated by students, but the realization in the end was that it was the people inside the school building and out in the wider community, that make Bondar such a special place to be. Thank you to all of our Bondar Special Guest Readers for taking the time to connect with us and for allowing us to share some of what makes us unique with you.
